THE
SANCTUARY AWARD
The Ancient Spring is thought to have been the water supply fo the Saxon Town of Lydford, and is within an area of great archeological importance around its site.
A two year project has seen the site cleared, regraded and replanted to enhance this feature of old Lydford. Traditional granite setts have been laid to provide better access from which to view the spring itself.
During the project, a wildlife survey was carried out by The Devon Wildlife Trust, and the planting and future maintenance plans for the site were submitted by them.
Care has been taken to support the ecology of the site, whilst making it more accessible and attractive for human visitors.
The Spring is accessed by a short walk along the bridlepath behind the Castle Inn, or alternatively from a footpath adjacent to the Nicholls Hall.
Photographs of The Ancient Spring will be published here shortly
